Joe Pug - A Brief Music Review

I would like to present to the Hub community the musical talent of a man named Joe Pug. He is a young man who searched a while for his passion at the wonderful school of UNC Chapel Hill, but who has finally found it in the melodies of his guitar.

I was told about Joe by a friend while we were having a casual discussion about music. So it made me smile when I started reading Joe’s website and saw his comment; “You heard about my music from a friend. Simple as that.” Now, I sometimes feel that artists can be a bit cliche. They speak of free art, of bucking the establishment, of steering clear of the chains of money and fame that create the top 40 hits that we all love to hate. Joe doesn’t deviate from this mold. His website makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon the last true source of art to be found in the world. He is even currently offering to send you free cd’s. Perhaps his sense of giving and creating art for arts sake will stay with him. Perhaps it will fall by the wayside as he garners support and the money start rolling in.

Either way, I think you should give him the chance to find out. By that, I mean go listen to the guy. He has three songs on his website that you can download, and a few more that you can listen to on his myspace page.

The first artist that comes to mind when I hear Joe Pug is Bob Dylan. Just good ole’  guitar, vocals, harmonica coming together to weave a tale. Do I have clue what the songs are talking about? No, not yet really. But the songs have a drive to them, a soul if you will. They make you stop and pay attention because you know whatever it is he’s talking about, it sure seems important. The simplicity of each song is a welcome change from the auto-tuned, technology-laden songs that run rampant now-a-days. So I say, long live the folk tune. Give Joe Pug a listen.
